about the checkered garter snake, yet I am
completely and utterly amazed by it.

About Michael Leidner
About South Texas Herps:
South Texas Herps is a small home based business
that was created to help me share my passion,
snakes.
About Me:
I was born and raised in Mission, TX located in The Rio Grande Valley in
South Texas. As a child my dad always had a snake, usually a wild caught
great plains rat snake, and I grew up with a passion for, and an
appreciation of, snakes and reptiles. I have a Bachelors Degree in Range
and Wildlife Science from Texas A&M University-Kingsville. My minor field of
study while at TAMUK was Biology. This fall I began teaching school at Alice
I.S.D. in Alice, Texas. I am teaching biology to high school freshman and
sophomores. This is the first time in my life I have had a permanent job, it is
a little scary and quite exiting at the same time. For the first time I will not
have to worry about how to pay the bills or even wonder if the animals will
get feed. I will be able to grow and expand my herp collection, while doing a
job that I think I love (well at least I get the Summer off).
I believe that educating young people is the key to the preservation of many
endangered snake species. I do my best at any opportunity to educate
people about the benefits of reptiles and why they should be protected and
not killed mercilessly (check out the letter I sent to Texas Fish and Game
Magazine).
As a child, I also grew up hunting and fishing and continue to do both. In the
past I have worked as a quail guide and dog handler in South Texas, I also
get out and duck hunt Baffin Bay and goose hunt the fields near my house
every chance I get.
